Fitting the brass drain basket

Our ceramic, tadelakt and Tamegroute sinks have a drain hole of about 4.4 cm (1.75"), and they come with a handmade brass drain basket. To use the basket, you need one standard part under the sink: an unslotted center-screw basin waste. This guide is for you and your plumber.

The part you need

An unslotted center-screw basin waste (in the UK, a "centre-pin basin waste") with a 1¼" (32 mm) tail. These kits come with a steel grid on top. Our brass basket replaces that grid; the body, gaskets and center screw are used as they are.

How it fits together

  • The brass basket sits in the drain hole from inside the bowl.
  • The drain body presses against the underside of the sink with a rubber gasket.
  • A long screw goes through the center of the basket and threads into a cross-bar inside the body, clamping the sink between the two parts.
  • So the body doesn't have to match the drain hole size. It only needs a rim wider than the hole.

What the drain body needs

  • Unslotted: no overflow slot.
  • A top rim and gasket wider than the drain hole.
  • An opening wide enough to take the basket's cup.
  • A center screw long enough for the sink wall. Handmade ceramic and tadelakt walls are thicker than standard basins, and the screw should go at least 1 cm into the cross-bar. Kits usually include a screw of about 70 mm; if it's too short, a longer stainless steel machine screw with the same thread can replace it.
  • In the US, a plain unthreaded tail, so it fits a standard slip-joint trap.

Where to find one

Where What to search for
UK and Ireland centre-pin basin waste, unslotted, 1¼"
France and Belgium bonde de lavabo à grille avec vis centrale, sans trop-plein
United States Rarely stocked in stores, so it usually has to be ordered online from European suppliers. Standard US pop-up and grid drains won't work, because their top flange is part of the threaded body.

Installing on ceramic and tadelakt

  • Seal with neutral-cure silicone. Plumber's putty can stain tadelakt and unglazed ceramic, and acetic-cure silicone can mark tadelakt and brass.
  • Tighten the screw only until the gaskets compress evenly. Overtightening can crack ceramic or chip tadelakt around the hole.
